NAHBS 2017- The Memories

It was a great opportunity to have the NAHBS located so conveniently in Salt Lake City this year. A number of cycling enthusiasts from the Upper Valley were able to make the trip to NAHBS at the Salt Palace. A handmade bicycle represents the perfect intersection of art, craftsmanship, and engineering. Brian’s Kelson bikes compared favorably with the best bikes in the show. Brian’s blue road bike was displayed at the Campagnolo booth. One of the Campy reps told us that it had been one of the most popular bikes they featured.
We had a great time at the show and visited with builders from around the world. I have posted a number of links with photos from the show and I would encourage you to take a look at them.

NAHBS 2017, Start of TNR

I hope the winter has treated everyone well. I look forward to seeing you at the TNR. Many of you are aware that the North American Handmade Bicycle Show will be taking place next weekend. The NAHBS is an especially big deal this year due to its location-Salt Lake City. You can follow the link below for more information or to purchase tickets.

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Venue: Salt Palace Convention Center
Dates: March 10 - 12, 2017
Show Hours:
Friday & Saturday 10 am - 6 pm
Sunday 10 am - 5 pm
http://www.2017.handmadebicycleshow.com/

It goes without saying that Kelson will be there. Brian has been burning the midnight oil building some incredible bikes for the show including full carbon road and gravel bikes and a carbon-steel fat bike. The NAHBS is a very proud moment for Brian, his family, friends, and supporters.

Next Sunday also marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time and as such the potential start of the Tuesday Night Ride:  6 p.m. Tuesday March 14th at Sticks and Stones. I am saying “potential” start of the TNR because March weather is unpredictable and the ride is subject to cancellation due to weather and safety conditions. There will be no prizes for riding in a blizzard and no prizes for being the fastest guy in month of March.

I am planning on sending a limited number of mass mailings this year. If you want to be removed from or added to the email distribution list, let me know. For most of our routine communication we will be relying on the Rexburg Cycling Blog http://rexburgcycling.blogspot.com/
and Kellen’s Rexburg Cycling Facebook page.
Best wishes to everyone for a safe and successful 2017 cycling season.                            Dave

From Kellen: JH Cycling-Doping in Jackson Hole

DOPING IN JACKSON HOLE

As some of you will no doubt already know, doping has entered the spotlight in Jackson. Holly Balogh, a local triathlete has been banned from competition for four years. The reason for such a harsh suspension for a first offense is that not only did Ms Balogh dope, she also then ignored the admonitions of her coaches to stop doping or stop competing. When she refused to do either, her coaches contacted USA Triathlon/Ironman and informed them of their client's behavior. Ironman arranged to have her tested at her next race. She failed that drugs test.

What she did next is an indication of her lack of remorse. Rather than apologize for her cheating, return prize money/prizes, and sit out her ban, Ms Balogh chose to begin entering ultrarunning races...under a different name. While it is still unclear whether the ultra races she entered were under the auspice of WADA rules, her use of a pseudonym to race is a clear indication she felt she was "getting away" with something.

Ms Balogh has been contacted by JHCycling and informed that she will not be permitted to attend any JHC events or group rides.

The JH News & Guide is in the midst of writing an article/conducting an interview with Ms Balogh. JHCycling and others in the Jackson athletic community have been contacted by the newspaper for comment.

JHCycling will release a statement on this matter after the publication of the newspaper article.

Rebecca Rusch: Blood Road Movie Premiere

The most important journey of my life.

In 2015, I took my biggest journey and most important ride of my life: a 1200-mile attempt to ride the entire length of the historic Ho Chi Minh trail through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.  I first spoke publicly about the trip in my recent TEDx Talk.  But this month, the entire story will unfold when my first film, "Blood Road" has its World Premier and is the opening film at the 2017 Sun Valley Film Festival on Wednesday, March 15, at the Sun Valley Opera House.

"Blood Road" chronicles what has, in many ways, been the most difficult journey of my career.  This ride was not a race or record breaking attempt.  Instead, it was a journey to get to know my father, a fighter pilot who was shot down and killed during the Vietnam War, and to find a missing part of myself.  It was a physically and emotionally demanding expedition, and ultimately a life-changing experience.  To be able to share the story with the help of Red Bull Media House is a powerful gift to the memory of my father.  I'm so proud to be the messenger for this important tale of healing and forgiveness.

I hope you'll be able to join me for the World Premiere in Sun Valley, or stay tuned for details about the film coming to more screens and platforms.
