Gravel Option for Next Week's TNR

Image copyright Rebecca’s Private Idaho/rebeccarusch.com
I have had some requests for a gravel option for next week’s Tuesday Night Ride. Bring the bike of your choice, road or gravel. I think the general plan will be to ride south via 5th West, turn east at the old Lyman church and then south toward Big Jud’s. The gravel bikes will turn east one mile before Big Jud’s and ride up Squires’ Dugway to gravel. The road bikes will continue south to do some variation of the Twin Bridges ride. Please help spread the word to the people who are currently in the Rexburg area. Also, best of luck to KJ and Tony at the St. George triathlon.

Rapido Pump Head Kickstarter Update

I thought some of you might be interested in seeing this update.  More information here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1087940162/the-rapido-pro-pump-head-for-bicycles

http://www.rapidopump.com/

In our quest to build the best performing product possible, we have created a new prototype based on some design enhancements. The new prototype is more compact than the original prototype making it easier to get between tightly spaced spokes. In the picture below, the wheel diameter is 20". The new prototype is using a plastic slide ring for testing purposes only and the production version is still slated to use a stainless steel version like prototype #1.

Final Color Selections:

Due to minimum order quantities required by our factory, we had to narrow the color selections from 5 to 3. We have tallied up all of the color choices based on you the surveys that you answered and the winners are: Road Gray, Sunset Fire and Electric Frog

Tour of Utah Announces 2015 Route

Heber Valley, Image copyright Casey B. Gibson/gbgphoto.com/velonews.com
The 2015 route is notable for a couple of reasons:  1. It marks the first time that the Tour of Utah will visit Idaho (briefly) 2. The Queen Stage to Snowbird (and as a result the Ultimate Challenge) will include 13,000 feet of climbing again this year.

Cube 2015: Mark Your Calendars

I have been in contact with Tom Anderson, the City of Rexburg Race Director, and various other people who have been involved in the organization of the Cube cyclocross race in the past. We have agreed upon Saturday October 24th as the date for the 2015 Cube. More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to that date. The Cube has been a good event in the past and it continues to improve thanks to the help and involvement of the local cycling community.

From Cameron: Steep Hill TV

I commented to Cameron Patch that I had had difficulty finding a good Riders-to-Watch preview video (like the ones that I have posted for other classics) for the Amstel Gold Race which takes place tomorrow. We also talked about the difficulty in getting live streaming coverage of cycling events and finding spoiler-free post race videos. Cameron suggested that I take a look at steephill.tv (link below) which serves as kind of an on-line clearing house of videos and live coverage to the major races. They have a link to live coverage of Amstel Gold in the morning. Thanks to Cameron for the link, I hope it will be helpful to our readers

Kristin Armstrong returns to U.S. team for Pan Am TT - VeloNews.com

It has been widely believed that Idaho's own Kristin Armsfrong would really like a third Olympic gold medal. Years ago, my family and I were able to watch what I believe was her professional cycling debut in the HP Women's Challenge as part of a composite Boise-based team. We felt a tremendous sense of local pride as she won two World TT Championships in addition to the gold medals. At 41 years of age, she has her work cut out for her, but I would not bet against her. Best of luck, Kristin Armstrong.

Exciting Paris-Roubaix Finale

I am pretty nostalgic today reminiscing about the golden age of extended same day and real –time coverage of the Spring Classics on OLN/Versus, especially the crown jewels Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. That level of television coverage would probably have never existed in the US without Lance Armstrong’s domination of the Tour de France. Maybe, the current coverage would be better had it not been for Lance’s fall from grace.  More likely, today’s abysmal level of network coverage is due primarily to the short attention span and fickle viewing habits of American sports fans who would rather watch bass fishing than bicycle racing. In the meantime, let’s all be grateful for YouTube.

The Guardian: Death of a Night Cyclist

Eddy Merckx - La Course en Tete (1974)

This is another great film that I bought from WCP at about the same time as Hell of The North. Also available now on YouTube.

A Sunday In Hell (1977). Full Length Version

This is a great movie. I purchased the DVD from World Cycling Productions about 10 years ago. I am amazed by what you can find on YouTube. Running time is about 1:45.

From Steve Wasden: Some Things I Have Learned in Thirty Years on a Bike

Some things I've learned from my thirty years on a bike for a safer and more enjoyable TNR.

1. Keep your head up and be aware of what the bike in front of you is doing, also so you can see what is up ahead on the road.

2. When you take a pull try to keep the speed steady and where it was when you got to the front. If we are going 22 mph and you get to the front and quickly crank it up to 25 mph and don't fall off until 18 mph that is a bad pull. It's dangerous and wears a person out quicker. If you feel the group can go faster, then increase the speed slowly. Also fall off before you become so tried you can't hang on to the group and we end up waiting for you.

3. When you fall off to the side after a pull, signal that you are pulling out. A simple arm gesture is all it takes.

4. Let others behind you know what is up ahead. Point out pot holes, RR tracks, people slowing down, rumble strips and dogs.

 5. If you're feeling strong take a little longer pull, if you are struggling to hang on don't worry about pulling at all. This way everybody can get the workout they are looking for.

6. Learn h
ow to ride in a straight line.

7. It's not important that everybody finish together for the TNR, but I do think it's important that everybody gets to ride with someone else for most of the ride. If you see someone drop back and if you're totally knackered, also drop back and make a friend.

8 If you are persistent and come most every week, you become a better rider and you will become faster.

New S&S Jersey Available for Pre-Order

You may have seen the new S&S jersey already on the Rexburg Cycling Facebook page. These are top quality DNA jerseys. The design is a color reverse of last year's design. Please conatct Joe to place your order. He would like to move on this fairly quickly. No bibs are being offered at this time, but the new jersey will go great with the old bibs. The guys at Sticks and Stones are offering the jersey at their cost which is $75.

A VN April 1 Tradition

VeloNews.com has a long tradition of April Fools’ Day stories.  I am gullible enough to believe all of them, at least for a minute. I think it is a safe bet that a couple more April Fools' based stories will appear over the course of the day today.
