Commencal's Rémi Thirion on the new Supreme DH V4

The beginning of the video is an infomercial for the bike. I would start it at the 2 minute mark.

Product Follow-up Hurricane Products Fork Up

I have mostly been transporting my fat bike in the back of the Trooper, so last weekend was my first extended road trip with the Fork Up. I had to improvise a little. The Fork Up tends to tip backward, so rather than fighting that, I wrapped the center portion in foam and electrical tape and tipped it back onto the wheel tray.

If you examine this picture, you will notice three flat washers that I had to place on the skewer to allow it to tighten securely. The spacing is supposed to be bike make and model specific. Somehow, we did not get an exact match and the center portion of the Fork Up is a little too narrow to allow the quick release to be tightened securely. The design is asymmetrical and I wondered if rotating it would help, but the hub spacing would still be too narrow.
Also, the skewer is non-locking, so I added a little security in the form of a cable lock. I realize that will not deter a determined bike thief, but hopefully will discourage the casual thief.

From Lana: Trans Andes Challenge

A friend of Lana’s is competing in the 2016 Trans Andes Challenge. Lana sent a link to a series of videos from last year’s race. I will embed a sample video here. If you are curious about the race, you can watch all of the videos after the jump.

Fat Biking SLC's Corner Canyon Trails

I met Tim in Salt Lake City yesterday to ride the Corner Canyon Trail system. We started from the Coyote Hollow Trailhead near the Draper LDS Temple. Tim put together a loop that included the Ghost Falls Trail, Ann’s Trail, and various others with a total estimated vertical of 2000 feet or so. http://www.cornercanyontrails.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Corner-Canyon-Trails-2015.pdf
This was a fat bike experience mostly unlike our local riding which relies heavily on snowmobile trails. The Corner Canyon Trails were generally narrower, steeper, and more technical. Regardless of conditions, Tim is the epitome of smoothness wherever he rides and yesterday was no exception. In contrast, I flailed and crashed my way through a lot of the ride. In spite of that, it was tremendous fun and something that I highly recommend.

Rebecca's Private Idaho: Early Registration Opens Tomorrow

While the official opening of the 4th annual Rebecca's Private Idaho is this Friday, January 15th, I've decided to flip the button early for those of you who have saddled up with me before.

To make sure everyone is able to get the true RPI hometown experience, we may choose to limit the field.  We want you to feel like more than a bib number and that you are riding with friends, even if you are trying to make them cry by dropping them on the climbs!

(use the link above, the website will still say reg is closed until Friday)

See you on the trails, #jointherusch,

Tate Reports on the Early Season

 Tate and Clint post-race
Early Break

The Move That Split the Field
The Final Move, Winning!
This weekend I was in St. George for the first race of the season and Clint and I were talking at the start line about how much riding and racing from Rexburg has influenced us. Anyway I just wanted to send you a few photos and a quick note regarding the race. I know its early to be racing already but in Nevada and Southern California the season starts in January and is extremely busy until April. After April it gets to hot so we have to enjoy the cool weather while we can.
The Desert Series Crit race is put on by a shop out of St. George Utah called Rapid Cycling during January - March. It consists of 4 crits, 1 TT, and a Road Race. I know most of you guys are still enjoying the fat bike season and ski season but if any one in the Rexburg area is interested in heading South for a weekend I highly recommend checking these events out. Plus most of the time we spend the night and make a training weekend out of the trip its a great opportunity to get some base miles in for 2016 season.
Anyway this is a big race for our team due to it proximity to Las Vegas and that fact that I won the series last year. This year the goals were the same, come ready to win. Fortunately we were able to make that happen. An early break went and I found myself up the road with a teammate and 6 other extremely talented racers. Everything went well and according to plan as we launch an attack at the base of the hill on the last lap. My teammate was able to stay away for the win and I finished in 5th. It was great way to start the 2016 season and blow off the cobwebs. We have a big season planned including Tour of Gila, Cascade Classic, and Redlands.
Hopefully I won't get burnt out and have some fitness come July for Crusher! It would be great to see you guys there again!

Full Coverage of Kelton's Race From Cyclocross Magazine

Kelton Holds His Own with America's Top Juniors

Thanks to Brian for real time updates during the race this morning. Kelton started near the back of the field, in the 80th position due primarily to the difficulty of accumulating USA Cycling points in an area with few sanctioned races.

From the minute the gun went off, he rode like a kid on a stolen bicycle. By the midpoint of the race he had managed to ride himself into the top half of the field.

At that point Kelton had the misfortune of a flat tire which he had to ride for three minutes or so to get into the pits for a bike change. It was a bit of bad luck that resulted in a loss of time and places rather than continuing his upward trajectory through the field.

In spite of that, Kelton feels good about the race and the fact that he was able to ride so well in a very competitive field. Kelton, we are proud of you.

Plan the 2016 Season Next Thursday Night at Kellen's House

This message mostly applies to people living in and around the Rexburg area and may apply less to individuals with very specific personal cycling goals for 2016. For the rest of you, please consider coming to Kellen’s house at 7 p.m. next Thursday January 14th. We will be discussing plans for the 2016 cycling season including the TNR and identifying races and events that will be a priority in 2016. Your input and suggestions would be welcome.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Dave

From Brian: Nationals Update. Kelton Rides Well in Preliminary Race

The course is unreal! They will have a hard time beating this one in Reno. Lots of climbing, really steep, I switched Kelton's cassette out for a 11-36 with a 38 on the front...glad I did. Today was good because it rained and Kelton excels in tough conditions, tomorrow looks dry. He did really good in the NonChampionship category today starting at 85th and moving up to 25th. He took it easy the last couple laps to save something for tomorrow. He will race at 9am tomorrow morning, still starting around the 80th position. Watching CX at this level is pretty awesome!

Not a Fat Bike

Last Call for the Crusher

The Upper Valley will be well represented again at the Crusher with ten or so participants registered. There are a handful of registration slots remaining as of 5;30 this afternoon, but I expect them to fill before the evening is over.

I’m not saying it is a good idea, but if you want to ride the 2016 Crusher, the time to decide is now. A few people have been asking about my Crusher plans. As of now, I think I am in for at least one more year.     Dave

Kelton Counts Down To Cross Nationals

Kelton is featured today in a prominent article in the Post Register. If you have a subscription to the PR, you can read the article here: http://www.postregister.com/articles/featured-sports-local/2016/01/03/ashton-teen-compete-cyclocross-nationals   If not, you will have to pick up a print copy. Kelton will be traveling to Asheville, North Carolina on Thursday along with Brian and Heather to compete in the USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships on Saturday. https://www.usacycling.org/2016/16cxnationals
Kelton is only fourteen years old, but rides with experience and confidence well beyond his age. He will be competing in the Junior Championship against 15 and 16 year olds with a goal of finishing in the top ten. If you know Kelton, you do not need me to tell you he is a great kid with a lot of heart. We all wish him well at Nationals. If you would like to make a contribution to Kelton’s effort, a Go-Fund-Me page is still available. https://www.gofundme.com/jj6jfggs

New Parking, Grooming, Access to Moody Creek, Lyon Creek

It has been just over a month since Tony and I rode in the Lyon Creek/Kelly Canyon area. At that time, we drove in on the Lyon Creek Road as far as the Luthy Corrals. We headed back to Lyon Creek (Lyon/Lyons/Lyman, you choose) today. In previous years, the road has been plowed to the end of the pavement at Lyon Creek. We were surprised to find today that the road was only cleared to the T-intersection of the Walker Siding Road and the Lyon Creek Road. A parking area has been cleared at the intersection. Beyond that point, the road has been groomed for snowmobiles including Moody Creek, where we rode today, and Lyon Creek. The new road maintenance plan makes the approach to the canyons significantly longer, but it is not an unpleasant ride across the dry farms.
