DKXL on a Tandem and Other Adventures

Supporting the Tour Divide Community
Right now I'm sitting at Brush Mountain Lodge in Colorado helping Tour Divide riders as they pass through. I'd be lying if I said I'm not dreaming of being out there but it's great watching and supporting everyone on this journey.

Last week I got the chance to guide a client on an overnight gravel route in the Tetons. He has the goal to ride the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. Throughout the year many people reach out and I field questions in regards to bikepacking, often about the Tour Divide specifically. I really enjoy offering my experiences and knowledge to help others reach their goals. Some of the conversations turn into more of a consultation where I interview the rider and work on the knowledge they need and/or are looking for. Whether it's equipment, bike set-up, strategy, mind set, attitude, physical conditioning, or route info, I can cover it all. In the end these people become my friends and it is an amazing feeling to help them and take part in growing the community.

Dirty Kanza XL 350
The Dirty Kanza XL 350 Mile Race on a tandem with Tracey was hard, challenging, demanding but all so beautiful at the same time.

Our Salsa Powderkeg was our trusty steed and one that we love to ride. It was outfitted with some new Industry 9 wheels (Note: Not made for a tandem but they have been the most solid wheels yet that I have ridden on the tandem, stoked!) and a Cane Creek Viscoset, which once again proved itself to be a great headset. The Teravail Sparwood tires were bombproof, which is a true test on a tandem.

I like each of the Salsa handlebars; the Cowbell, Cowchipper, and Woodchipper are all great road bars, but I use them differently depending the event. Now that these handlebars are available in carbon, they're even more comfortable beyond offering a wide range of hand positions. I haven't run the Woodchipper in a while and mounted a carbon one (note: I always go for the widest version possible for adventure/ultra distance riding) and was very, very happy with that decision. I really enjoy relearning things that I have learned and/or tried in the past and this was one of those classic times.

Do We Need More Rules in Strider Bike Racing? - Video Cyclocross Magazine

Keeping Up With Rebecca Rusch

Riding into summer and making it count.

Hello there friends and happy SUMMER!

I set some important goals this year. They are simple, but essential for my health and wellness, so I wanted to share.

1.  Ride more: yep, Arizona Trail Race, Dirty Kanza XL, Utah bikepacking expedition...and more on the calendar.

2.  Spend more time in Idaho: check.  Launched Rusch Academy endurance training camps, exploring my own back yard and expanding the distance offerings for Rebecca's Private Idaho.  Wanna #JoinTheRusch and come ride with me?

3.  Protect what's important to me: On it!  I'm focusing my rides on Public Lands awareness and protection and working to officially launch my Be Good Foundation that will target my efforts to use my bike as a vehicle for change. #BeGood

So, scroll down for some great stories, photos and tips that may inspire you to take on a multi-day adventure ride or race and hopefully check off some of the things important to you this year.

Be Good,
Exploring & Protecting Public Lands

Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments are adventure wonderland. They're also shrinking. Check out my full trip report as I loaded up my Niner Air 9 RDO for a 6 day bike packing, rock climbing, pack rafting tip there to explore the sacred lands of the Hopi and Navajo and showcase the importance of their protection.

Tears of Accomplishment, Gratitude and Relief.

This is exactly what it feels like to finish the Dirty Kanza XL after 28.5 hours alone on the bike, being welcomed into the finish chute in Emporia, Kansas by friends and fans…there is no better feeling.
"What could possibly go wrong?"

I recently sat down with Gear Patrol to reveal how having a well-prepared CamelBak is tantamount to successful days in the backcountry. Read the article here.
Wild Ideas Worth Living

I recently sat down with the Wild Ideas Worth Living podcast to chat about taking risks and carving your own trail. Listen to the full interview here.
Make your next adventure the best it can be by registering for one of my Rusch Academy camps before taking what you've learned and applying it at Rebecca's Private Idaho in late August.

Tour of the Moody

Ryan and Jeff have been talking for a while about a truly epic gravel ride in the Moody Creek and Kelly Canyon area. On Saturday, Ryan put all of the logistics together and recruited Sam and Bo to drive support. We owe them an extra debt of gratitude on a long hot day. The route started and ended in Rexburg with a big loop to the east end of the Long Hollow Road, a drop to the South Fork of the Snake River from the Y-Junction, and a climb back up to Kelly Canyon and Morgan Summit before returning to Rexburg by way of Lyons Creek and Walker Siding. Jeff mapped out the ride prior to starting to get an preview of the details: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/18992395 The pre-ride map was remarkably accurate in its estimate of the distance at around 72 miles vs 73 miles, but significantly underestimated the climbing at about 4700 feet vs 6000+ feet of vertical. Given the added climbing and the generally soft conditions following road grading, riding time was about six hours.
The ride was everything we hoped it would be, although one warning is in order. We got a reasonably early start and encountered only minimal traffic in the first half of the ride. The second half of the ride was Mad Max Fury Road. Over the past twenty years or so, the number of cyclists, particularly mountain bikers in the Kelly Canyon area has increased steadily. The number of campers and motorized vehicle users of every type imaginable has increased exponentially. If a cyclist cuts the apex of a blind corner, he can count on meeting a Razr moving in the opposite direction doing the same.

The combination of cycling kits Saturday was an unplanned coincidence which Greg has called the TCI, Kelson, and Sled Shed Greatest Hits. Four generations of the local team kit were represented. The photo was taken at Kelly Island following the most difficult part of the day for me. But after significant rehydration and refueling (eating Dark Chocolate Peanut M&Ms in the photo) I felt pretty good for the climb to Morgan Summit and the remainder of the ride.

Congratulations to Tony, Chris Babb and the other locals who competed in the Pocatello Pedal Fest MTB Race. I also understand that Tony built and installed some bridges in the Moody Creek area this week.

Rebecca Rusch Crushes Gravel in Kansas!

Rebecca Rusch Wins Inaugural Dirty Kanza XL

7x World Champion Completes 350-Mile Event in 28:27:02

Rebecca, a 7x World Champion, rode away victorious at the inaugural Dirty Kanza XL bicycle race held over the weekend of June 1, 2018 in Emporia, Kansas. New for 2018, Dirty Kanza event organizers added the Dirty Kanza XL event, an invitation-only 350-mile gravel bicycle race, for riders who found the standard 200-mile Dirty Kanza race too short. Rebecca was the first female finisher with a time of 28:27:02 and finished fourth overall in the highly competitive field.
"DKXL is Dirty Kanza, taken back to the very basics of gravel. It's the DK that (we) first set out to create in 2006. It's long. It's hard. It's Extra-Large. It's totally rider-self-supported," said Jim Cummins, the executive director of Dirty Kanza Promotions.
"I'd previously competed in and won five variations of Dirty Kanza, and I was excited to try my hand a sixth time and take on the challenge of DK XL after an invitation was extended to me." said 7x World Champion Rebecca Rusch. "This win is huge! The feeling of coming back to screaming crowds of friends and hugs after more than 28 hours alone on the bike...this is the feeling of personal accomplishment and connection with community that is what this event is about for every rider out there."
Rebecca first competed in the (standard) 200-mile Dirty Kanza six years ago and it ignited a passion in her for gravel riding and racing events. The participatory and communal approach to Dirty Kanza served as inspiration for her to create her own Rebecca's Private Idaho event held annually in her hometown of Ketchum, Idaho. For 2018, Rebecca's Private Idaho will be take place over Labor Day weekend (August 31st – September 2nd) and will include The Queen's Stage Race (3-day Stage Race), The Big Potato (94-mile ride), and The Small Fry (56-mile ride) along with a host of family friendly participatory events. More information regarding Rebecca's Private Idaho can be found at rebeccasprivateidaho.com.
