Sandy Point, Random Pictures, Late Season 2021

Last weekend, I traveled to Boise to meet Dan and Shae for the end-of-season SICX cyclocross races at Sandy Point. It was a fine event--fun, well organized, and a great way to wrap up the season. Shae won the women's race on Saturday without a great deal of difficulty and came as a spectator on Sunday. The Sandy Point course is almost entirely on grass with lots of little climbs and three sand pits per lap plus the addition of some beach sand on Sunday. I am not the biggest fan of sand but generally liked the course and felt like the sand worked well within the context.

In the early years of this blog, we posted a lot of content. Some of it was filler, but it also featured a lot of original content and reporting on local events. Over the past couple of years, it has been difficult to sustain a similar level of content. My apologies to our handful of dedicated readers. I am grateful to everyone who has shared stories and pictures on the Rexburg Cycling blog and Facebook page as well as to Jeff, Kellen, Joe, and Dawn for their administrative support.

The mild fall weather of 2021 has been phenomenal for late season cycling with the road, gravel, and MTB seasons extending well into December. At this point however, I am looking forward to some serious winter with fat biking and skate skiing. Weather and fate permitting, the TNR is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, March 15th.

Conditions are less than ideal but the TNR is ON for tonight.

5:30 Sled Shed

Cube pre-ride canceled. Status of TNR questionable.

I just went out to assess the snow situation and measured just over 8 in of wet heavy snow on my deck. As of this moment the snow is not going anywhere. The Cube course will be unreliable tonight. I am hopeful that I can do some trimming Thursday or Friday morning. Hope to do a Cube pre-ride at 5:00 p.m. after work Saturday afternoon.
At this moment it is unclear if the roads will be open enough for a TNR tonight. Let's plan to make a call by about 4:00 p.m.

Cube Preview on TNR Tomorrow

We are planning to have some options for the TNR (5:30 tomorrow) including a traditional road ride and preview of the 2021 Cube course. If your primary interest is the Cube preview, you may want to consider a cross bike.

Toughest Chick-a-Saw Ever

Dry late season conditions felt like churning through the sand pit at a cross race all day long. If we learned one thing, it is to schedule earlier in the season next year. Thanks to Sam and the kids for all of your support!

4 Peaks Gran Fondo 2021

It was another fine day at the 4 Peaks Gran Fondo yesterday, one of the most fun and well organized regional events. I like the format a great deal with timed climbs and less structured transitions. A number of Upper Valley cyclists participated, I was not organized enough to get many pictures. Full results here:  https://www.sportstats.ca/display-results.xhtml?raceid=113357

Buffalo Springs Backroads

Ryan, Dave and I take a little spin to find the headwaters of the Buffalo River and then follow it downstream.  Warning: many downed trees lie ahead!

TNR canceled tonight

If you've been outside you know why.

Work on SLC’s foothill trails halted until at least October

https://www.sltrib.com/news/environment/2021/05/24/work-slcs-foothill-trails/
I am not insensitive to the controversy of these new trails. But they greatly enhance the atea's kountain biking. I rode in SLC with Thomas on Saturday including several of the new downhill specific mountain bike trails that have been built with this tiny bulldozer machine. Hundreds if not thousands of small drops and rollers. An amazing experience.

MIke Harris-Southern Valley Singletrack

Chris and Tony took me to ride the Southern Valley Trails south of Victor near the bottom of the Teton Pass. These trails are not too long, but are high quality winter singletrack with twists, turns, climbs, and drops.

Update from Rebecca Rusch: Pain is Our Teacher

Hello Friends,

As we wrap 2020:  a year of struggle, unrest, and uncertainty, it is time to reflect on the lessons, growth and evolution we are going through.  As a human race and as individuals we have experienced devastating pain this year. As an athlete, I continue to draw on my trail experiences to help guide me during challenges.  Rich Roll once asked me, "what is your relationship with pain?" and my response: "pain is my teacher."  It is through hardship and struggle that we strengthen, evolve and grow. This year, my evolution involved embracing stillness and leaning into one of my navigational handrails of "Less = More" with less travel, less movement and more personal, internal development.  What is essential and important to me has become more crystalized.

Rusch Ventures, Rebecca's Private Idaho and Be Good Foundation have also evolved this year in meaningful and rewarding ways.  Through a revised and hybrid format, RPI and Giddy Up Challenge were able to reach, educate and inspire people in 11 countries around the world. I'm proud of that effort because our physical health is directly related to our mental health. Being a catalyst for others to heal and grow through sport is by far my most important work. The Be Good Foundation also made meaningful impact in grants and fundraising efforts focused on Covid relief, increasing diversity in cycling, expanding access to cycling for more people and continuing to clear bombs along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. I know many people want to just forget the pain of 2020. Instead, I suggest you open embrace the pain of 2020 and use the hardship as your teacher.  Use the lessons and the struggle to develop your resilience, then transfer that new found strength to Be Good efforts for yourself and your community.  Let's do this together. I'm looking forward to more evolution and impact with you!

Be Good,

Help Us Reach Our End Of Year Goal!

We are not done yet with our 2020 Be Good goals! Help us hit our target this year and be part of our mission to use our bicycles as a catalyst for healing, empowerment, and evolution. This is the time of year where we are typically riding in Laos for our annual MTB LAO trip. From the lessons of 2020, we know that even if we aren't physically in a place together, we can still connect and make a difference in the world.

Jay Petervary's Fat Pursuit

I'm headed out on another winter adventure!  Jay P's Fat Pursuit was the first winter bike expedition I ever did years ago. This year's race is a fully self supported 200km "do-it-on-your-own winter adventure" that I'll be racing alongside my husband. I credit Jay for getting me involved with winter bike packing which ultimately led to me completing the Iditarod Trail Invitational 2x!  This year's event will be a true winter self support test for me!

Stayed tuned for more details on my race and check out my blog for winter training and racing tips!
The Adventure Stache Podcast

The #adventurestachepodcast is live! I had a GREAT conversation with my good friend and Red Bull teammate Payson McElveen!

Episode Description: "In this conversation, she and Payson talk about using success as springboard for pursuing projects outside of cycling, and why it's important to her to keep pushing the boundaries of her sport alongside running her own charitable foundation Be Good."
