No Fat Bikes at Teton Lakes!
I got a text from Randy at 1 a.m. this morning. After hours of grooming, the skate track at Teton Lakes was perfect. This morning, someone rode fat bikes on the new grooming. If this was you, never do it again. If you know who might have done this, please let them know that fat bikes are not allowed at Teton Lakes. No one loves a fat bike more than I do, but quality ski grooming and fat bikes do not mix. Ride that fat bike on a snowmobile trail someplace but not on Randy's ski grooming.
An Inaugural Address To Bring America Together | John Burke CEO Trek Bicycle
A few comments may be in order here. This is not a political blog and will never be one, except to advocate for the rights and safety of cyclists. I am not in full agreement with John Burke on every one of the 12 points in his "inaugural address" but I have included it here because he is a very smart, reasonable guy who brings the perspective of a CEO in the bicycle industry to some of the problems that we are facing as a nation.

Courtney Boice Wins 2016 International Fly Fishing Film Festival
Blue Halo Unicorns from Blue Halo on Vimeo. (This is a sampler from the award winning film)
Courtney is a Rexburg native and all around good guy who was a Rexburg Cycling regular back in the mountain bike days. Along with his partners in Western Waters Media, Courtney has traveled through Alaska, British Columbia, and the Arctic Circle making a series of fly fishing films, mostly on a shoestring budget. WWM won the 2016 IFF Film Festival against a number of big budget competitors with its film “Arctic Unicorns” in which the crew fish for brook trout, arctic char and Dolly Varden. Plus our buddy Tim Meikle is in the movie.
Courtney’s current film “The Hidden” has received a very warm reception and will likely be a top contender for the 2017 prize.
The full length version of Arctic Unicorns is about 15 minutes. I understand it will be available for purchase on Vimeo for $3. It is a spectacular film and absolutely a bargain at the purchase price.

Clear and Cold for Moody Creek Fat Bike Ride
The quality of a fat bike ride generally corresponds pretty closely to the
quality of the conditions, so I feel pretty lucky today. I rode the Moody
Creek to Lyon Creek (Lyon, Lyons, Lyman, your choice) loop. Conditions were
especially good on the Moody Creek side with cold temperatures, a
consolidated base, and recent grooming. It was a little more chewed up on
the Lyon Creek side.
I am still not especially happy about the relocation of the parking area
which adds a long transition to the start and finish of any winter access to
the Moody. Even with good conditions, it requires a solid three hour effort
to ride the Moody to Lyon loop from the new parking area. In spite of
evidence of quite a bit of snowmobile traffic, I did not see or hear a
single person before, during, or after the ride.

Green Timber Fat Bike
The general plan today was to ride over Robison Creek and drop down onto the Fish Creek Road. This is a very familiar gravel segment for people who have ridden in the Ashton area in the summertime. We were disappointed to find a lack of parking at the end of the road maintenance and a long series of no parking signs along the Robison Creek Road. We eventually settled for some dubious parking just south of the Green Timber Road. These are trails maintained for snowmobilers with little accommodation made for skiers or cyclists. You may remember my post about riding fat bikes with Tim in Salt Lake City last winter and how unusual it seemed to ride trails specifically maintained for fat bikes, snow-shoes, and other non-motorized recreation. If you are going to ride fat bikes in South Eastern Idaho, you really have to depend on snowmobile trails.
Here is a link to the extensive network of snowmobile trails maintained in Fremont County. http://www.co.fremont.id.us/departments/parks_rec/pdf/snowmap.pdf You may notice the curious deletion of the Green Timber Road between Highway 47 and the intersection designated “80” on the map which is where we stared our ride. We rode north to intersection “81” with the plan to continue north over Robison Creek. At that point, the majority of the traffic and better grooming turned west. Snow conditions were too soft to continue north.
It was cold today. The snowmobile trail was generally smooth and consolidated as it followed a Rails to Trails route over rolling farmland. (Note: This is not the Ashton to Tetonia trail, but Tony tells me it is an old railroad right-of-way). It was not the exact plan that we started with, but with bright clear skies, minimal wind, and good snow conditions, it was a fine day out on the big bikes. When Dawn saw this photo she commented: “Dan is certainly a sexy beast!”

Kelton Wraps Up Season With Excellent 12th Place Finish at CX Nationals
Today’s race was tough, and some things could have gone better. Kelton struggled with tire choice and a series of crashes prevented a higher finish. The winners today rode the same lap times that Kelton rode yesterday. In spite of the bad weather and course conditions, and a little bad luck, Kelton still showed his talent and determination with a strong 12th place finish in a field of 75 or so of the best young cyclocross racers in the country. On behalf of the local cycling community: Congratulations Kelton. We are very proud of you.
I am planning to post or link to some additional content from Kelton’s Nationals when all of the dust settles. In the meantime, don’t forget the link to tomorrow’s live coverage which I posted yesterday.

CX Nats-Kelton on Podium
Kelton competed today in a non-championship U-23 race today at Cyclocross Nationals against many of the best young cyclists in America. Below is a race report texted from Brian. Kelton will compete in the 15-16 National Championship Race at 12 EST Saturday. He is off to a great start in very tough conditions.
Brian: He did salvage the podium they go 5 deep. We will be going back for the presentation this evening. It would have been a great 3 way sprint for 2nd. Had he kept his chain on. He was able to stay in front of the #1 ranked junior by over a minute. There was a junior his age that passed him right in the end. He was from Chicago so the conditions suited him too. Kelton is very excited to have a medal from a national competition.
CX Nats-Kelton Shines
Brian via text: Well he had a amazing race. He moved into 2nd in front of Evan Clousa on the last lap. Threw his chain into spokes cuz he wrecked and bent his hanger. Ended up running for a little ways not sure he salvaged a podium but I'll let you know his final spot. He's a little bummed but I'm confident he beat the #1 contender in his category. Snowy and perfect hard conditions for Kelton.
