Fat Pursuit-The Video

Today's Post Register featured a report on the 2016 60 K Fat Pursuit which took place on Saturday. According to the PR article, temperature at the start was -20 F and dipped as low as -25 F. The difficulty was compounded by soft snow conditions that required miles of bicycle pushing. According to the PR, only about half of the 53 starters were able to finish. I had been feeling pretty bad about missing the Fat Pursuit even given the temperature until I read about the snow conditions. Congratulations to the finishers and non-finishers alike who were willing to get out in the snow and suffer.

Kelton Races Some of the Top Juniors in the US at Colorado State Championships

Congratulations to Kelton on an outstanding sixth place finish racing against numerous national contenders. According to Brian, conditions were sloppy during the Junior Race with a skiff of snow and super slick grass. Kelton rode an unreal 14 psi to maintain traction. In spite of difficult conditions, Kelton’s category had some of the fastest times of the day.
This photo was taken during the men’s pro race which Kelton rode to pick up points for a better starting position at Nationals. The figure on the podium is none other than Katie Compton, winner of the women’s pro race.

UTCX Adds Final 2016 Race

Single Speed Mayhem: There Will be Mud.

If you have followed cycling news the news over the weekend, you probably heard that recently retired Sven Nys competed in the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championship. Speculation is that he let Adam Craig win because of his ambivalence about accepting the traditional winner’s tattoo. This video is from the 2015 SSCX World Championships. I have posted some SSCX videos in the past, but I don’t believe I have posted this one. Enjoy.

Near the Menan Butte Road

I went on a ride with Tony this morning starting on the Menan Butte Road, on the south side of Highway 33 and west of the Menan Buttes. It is an area that Tony is very familiar with, mostly new to me. The area is crisscrossed by a fairly extensive network of primitive roads with just enough snow today to make the riding more fun and interesting that it would have been in the absence of snow. The only real negative is the area’s tremendous popularity with shooting enthusiasts. If you go there on a weekend, expect plenty of gunfire.

First Snow Ride of the Season

I was surprised to find perhaps 14 inches of snow today in the Lyons Creek area. Last year, Tony and I managed to get in a couple of good rides on snowy singletrack in the same area before it became unrideable, but we missed that window this year. The road had been plowed to Luthy Corrals but conditions were pretty rotten beyond that. Today was my first day back on the bike after almost two weeks sick so it was pretty nice just to be back out.

UTCX 2016 at Weber County Fairgrounds

I have a great day at UTCX today with Kellen, Greg, and KO in spite of getting absolutely destroyed in the Men’s B Race while Kellen managed to finish third. After a stormy start to the cross season, we enjoyed perfect weather again today.
I have always liked the Weber Race. The laps are long, mostly flat, and very fast on generally hard-packed surfaces. Over the years, the course has evolved to be a little more technical. From time, to time, they have included a potentially rideable high-risk obstacle. This year, it was a small drainage ditch perhaps two and a half feet across at the bottom of a gentle downhill to uphill transition following a 180 degree turn. There were embedded beams maybe 4" x 4" running along each side. Most people, even in the A Race, opted to dismount. The riders with the skills and confidence to jump the gap gained a modest advantage each lap.  UTCX wraps up their season two weeks from today although I have heard rumors that they may try to add on one additional race.

Stolen Mountain Bike

Missing bike
·         2009 Giant XTC Advanced. Hardtail with 26" wheels
·         Color: black carbon weave with white and blue accents
·         Brakes: hydraulic disk.  XT on the front, Hayes on the back.
·         Wheels: forgot the brand but there is a 2.2" Wolverine tire on the front and a 2.1" Panaracer Smoke Classic on the back (that is more worn than I would like to admit).
·         Groupo: XT everywhere but the front chain ring. It has a 3x9 setup. Note that the shift cable to the real derailleur is seized so it does not shift reliably. Someone will probably bring it in to a bike shop to get it fixed/replaced.
·         Fork: Rock Shocks SID Race. White. The remote lock has been removed from the bars.
·         Bars: Flat carbon. Both the ends are split and the end-plugs are missing.
·         Pedals: Crank Brothers Egg Beater
·         Saddle: Black, Blue, and White. Carbon seat post.
·         Serial Number:
Note: my bike has blue accents and a blue saddle.

This bike went missing between late October and the 11th of November 2016 from a garage in Rexburg. If someone brings this bike in for maintenance, please call:
·         Rexburg Police: case number 201605444 at phone number (208) 359-3008
·         James Helfrich: phone number (208) 201-6445 for a $50 reward.

Heather's Bengal Cross Pictures

Thanks to Heather for another batch of spectacular photos. Bengal Cross is the final race of the season in Southeastern Idaho. I have a photo above my desk from Bengal Cross two years ago which featured single digit temperatures and howling winds. It makes me especially sorry to have missed this year's race. Everyone looks pretty happy enjoying a Bengal Cross in idyllic conditions.

'Dog Alley" Exit Now Extra Bike-Proof

I rode Super Butte yesterday for the first time in months. This is the old exit just north of the Lorenzo Bridge on the east side. Due to the fortified closure of this intersection, my only option was to ride from the Menan-Lorenzo overpass to Thornton on the shoulder of Highway 20. With heavy afternoon traffic and abundant debris on the pavement, it was a long unpleasant transition. The Highway Department is in the process of closing the Bear World exit on the west side in a similar fashion.
Some of you signed Jeff's letter to the Highway Department petitioning them to make some provision for bicycles at these intersections. So far those pleas appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

How I Spent My Weekend

I had a little change of pace this weekend in the middle of cross season with a couple of mountain bike rides in the Salt Lake City area. I met Thomas, Stephen, Tim, and Tim’s buddy Ben to ride the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and its associated trail network. Tim and I rode fat bikes last winter at the southern end of the same extensive network. This time we rode two loops originating in the Avenues on the northern edge of the city.
The weather was unseasonably mild for November. The rides consisted of a combination of Jeep roads, singletrack, steep technical singletrack, and groomed bike park style downhill-only trails banked like a NASCAR track. Probably the best known trail that we rode is the Bobsled Trail which features high banks and multiple jumps over abandoned cars. I opted out of the car jumps but still lost a little skin. http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/bobsled.html
If you are curious to see Bobsled videos, they are numerous. I have embedded a sample video here.

Fine Day of Cross of Locals

A couple of competing weekend cyclocross events on Saturday drew participants from the Upper Valley. Dan and Shae had a good day at Blue Goose where Shae won the Women’s race.
Kellen, Kelton, and KO went to Boise for Turkey Cross where they all rode well against large fields on a very technical course. Kellen finished second in the Men’s Cat 4 race and may have won if not for a crash. Kelton finished third in the Men’s Cat 3.
**Update Brian also raced Turkey Cross-Sorry I missed that in the first post. According to Kellen, a number of the Boise racers had seen the Cyclocross Magazine post on Kelson and Brian's bikes drew a lot of attention.

Cube Goes Independent for 2017

Many of you have already heard this news: Tony Perkins, Chris Huskinson, and I have organized the Cube in partnership with the City of Rexburg since 2006. We met with the City yesterday and they informed us that they will no longer include the Cube as part of the Rexburg Races Series. We are proud of the Cube and hope to continue to put it on yearly regardless of the level of support we receive from the City of Rexburg. Hopefully, we can continue to count on your help and support as we move forward. We are looking at various options in terms of sponsorship and organization, but regardless of the form that takes, we will always need participants and volunteers. If you have any thoughts on the future of the Cube, I would be happy to hear from you.                               Dave

From Tony: Start Times for the Blue Goose

Tony contacted Gray Augustus to verify the following start times for the Blue Goose on Saturday:

Kid's race – 12:00

Beginner – 12:30

Advanced – 1:30

Lucho Dillitos: all natural guava fuel of the Colombian greats-Bike Rumor

I have had some experience eating Colombian bocadillo and when this product is marked in the US, I will be the first in line to buy it. Two ingredients-guava paste and sugar-wrapped in a leaf-my only concern is what kind of sticky mess this turns into in a wet jersey pocket.

A Couple More Cube Pictures from Dawn

Incredible Cube, Final TNR Tomorrow NIght

Thanks to everyone (participants, organizers, sponsors) for another great Cube yesterday. We are sorting out some technical issues, but plan to post a large number of high quality photos on the Rexburg Cycling blog sometime today.

Over many years, the Tuesday Night Ride has evolved from a duration of about five months to about eight months of weekly rides, due largely to the extension of Daylight Savings Time. But like all good things, even the extended season ends eventually. It is always with nostalgia and some sadness that we wrap up another year. The final TNR of 2016 will depart from Sticks and Stones at 5:30 tomorrow. We hope to see you there.

Positive Feedback from The Cube 2016

Thanks to Dawn for the photos in this post. We were fortunate enough to have two professional photographers on the course yesterday, Heather Williams and Ryan Chase, so we will be linking to and posting numerous additional photos. As most of our regular readers are aware, Brian Williams designed this year’s course and managed to incorporate some new and challenging features. All of the feedback that I got on the course was positive. Conditions were perfect for cross-cool, some mud, but highly rideable. At least three people, including me, went into the hard right just before Heckle Hill, with too much speed and hard braking. Team physician, Jeff Hancock, expertly stitched me up after the race. In addition to building the course, Brian designed and printed another very popular Cube shirt.
Irene from the City Rec Department promised me that official results will be posted tomorrow. In the meantime, I will acknowledge the winners that I am able to. Davey Mitchell won the Men’s “A” followed by Kelton and Kellen. No other women challenged Shae in the “A” race, so she had to content herself with beating most of the men. The “B” race featured very solid competition on the women’s side with Hannah Thatcher winning and the Hurst sisters Morgan and Emma finishing second and third. I will verify the men’s “B” podium tomorrow. It was won by a very fast guy in a Fitzgerald’s kit followed by a couple of the Madison Composite Team Riders.
One of the most promising things about yesterday’s Cube was the high level of participation by members of the high school Mountain Bike Team. All of the Madison kids rode great and I think had a lot of fun. They are the cross racers of the future. At the start of the “A” race, I attempted to acknowledge our numerous sponsors (Teton Oncology, Kelson, Joe Hill and Sticks and Stones, Bill’s Bike Shop, Dave’s Bike Shop, Farmer’s Bakery, Chris Huskinson, and many others), organizers (Rexburg Races-Jeff, Irene, Samantha. Chris Huskinson and Tony Perkins who with me have been the organizing committee since the original Cube, Jeff, Kellen, Dan, Shae, and many others), and supporters (the Cube racers, friends, family, photographers, volunteers). There is always the risk of overlooking someone who has contributed, so if I have failed to mention you personally, please forgive me.
I am going to give Eric Balog the final word on the 2016 Cube: “I wanted to publicly thank the Rexburg crew for hosting the Cube. It’s my favorite CX event of the year- I love the course, the organization, the racers, and the families/fans. You have built a great cycling community. Thanks for another fantastic event & congratulations to top racers like Davey, Kelton, Kellen-and really to EVERYONE that came out and raced.”

Thanks to Everyone for Another Great Cube Today

We enjoyed another fine day of cyclocross in Rexburg. The morning started out rainy, but the course held up pretty well, even in the wet conditions. We had a very strong showing from members of the Madison Composite Mountain Bike Team in both the B and A races. I will post more information along with photos tomorrow.

From L'Ora Del Ciclismo: This is Cyclocross

Great Pumpkin is Cancelled.

Sometimes, depending on the venue, conditions are too bad even for cyclocross. According to Gray, the new venue for the Great Pumpkin is deep, unrideable mud and conditions are only getting worse. The forecast is for the rain to diminish by morning. I am hopeful that we will have good conditions for the Cube. In addition to the Cube, please don't forget the other local races:
  • Blue Goose Saturday Nov 6th at Freeman Park in Idaho Falls
  • Bengal Cross Saturday Nov 12th at Bartz Field in Pocatello

Cube Preride, Updated Map, Updated Website

We had about a dozen people show up for the semi-official Cube pre-ride last night. Brian designed the course and it is outstanding, with a mix of familiar and novel elements. Thanks to Jeff for his excellent map and to Lana for updating her fine Cube website.  http://bit.ly/2eP4lSn
A lot of work goes into organizing the Cube and we are not done yet. It's going to be all-hands-on-deck at 7:30 Saturday morning to finish taping and marking the course. If you can be there, we need your help. For anyone who is not racing, the City can always use extra volunteers throughout the day, especially with the kid's race.
I am very grateful to everyone for their help and look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Cube 2016 Map

Many thanks to Brian, Kellen and Kelton (and others) for planning and vetting the course.  Here it is in all it's glory!

Epic Day at Missoula

We had a tremendous day of cyclocross at Rolling Thunder in Missoula on Saturday. The outstanding course was fairly technical with significant amounts of climbing, descending, and mud, as well as a pass through the Big Sky Brewing Co brewery. In spite of its difficulty, the course had a number of fast sections and flowed very well. Dan persuaded me to do a bang-bang with him (two races almost back-to-back). Kellen placed fourth in a fast Cat-4 field. Shae was absolutely flying in both the women’s Cat-4 and Cat-3 races.
Apparently Montana is a haven for multi-million dollar supercars due to its tax laws and super-rich part-time residents. Adjacent to the course were a couple of warehouses full of every exotic you could dream of (pictured with Kellen are a Pagani, two Bugattis, and a Porsche Carrera GT). The cars inside included a McLaren F-1 and rows of vintage Ferraris along with many others. Kellen, who has a very good eye for cars believes we were looking at $100 million of vehicles.
Thanks to Dawn and Kevin for excellent support and to Dawn and Shae for the photos.
