GCN: How Pro Cycling Differs From Other Professional Sports

Purest Form of Cycling

TWILIGHT AT THE VELODROME

New York was once the world capital of track cycling. Today, only one velodrome remains: the bumpy oval in Kissena Park, which is home to a summer racing series.

Jay P's Gravel Pursuit

Many of you know that Jay P offers two distances for many of his events including the Gravel Pursuit which features 60 and 120 mile options. Even though everyone has decent late season fitness, no one was anxious to spend the hours in the saddle that would have been necessary to complete the 120 mile loop just two weeks after Lotoja. We opted for the 60 mile which I think ended up being the goldilocks choice or in other words, just about right. The Gravel Pursuit was a top quality event all around; well designed, well organized, and well executed. It was among the highlights of the year for all of the Upper Valley participants.
Much of the route was very familiar to us as a result of numerous gravel rides in Island Park and specifically the Fish Creek area, but some portions were unfamiliar to us. I think the general consensus is that the route was just a little harder than we had anticipated. The climbs were not especially difficult, but fairly long. Portions of the route, particularly the top of the Chick Creek Road were rutted and rocky. Of the locals, Dan opted to run 40 mm tires and was the only one in the group to not experience at least one flat tire. In theory, tubeless should have the preferable option to avoid the numerous pinch flats which plagued many of the riders. Strangely, we had a couple of people on tubeless and everyone experienced about the same amount of tire trouble. Kellen had a very near miss when he blew a front tire on a high speed downhill.
Flat tires were probably the thing that kept Kellen and Ryan off the podium. Shae was once again the top female finisher and received some great prizes including a custom belt buckle.

Back By Popular Demand: TCI-Kelson Kit

Back by popular demand! The TCI-Kelson-Sticks 'n' Stones Kit

We have reopened the web store which you can access here: http://www.dnacycling.biz/tci/team-gear.html

As previous TCI will be subsidizing half the wholesale cost of the kits, leaving you a steal of a deal.

Keep in mind that this kit is a race fit and will generally run a size smaller than non-race fit cycling gear. This time around our plan is to keep the web store open until we can get the minimum numbers needed to submit an order (10 of each item). Much like Kickstarter, if we don't reach our minimum we'll not be able to submit the order and we'll refund your money.  (So please recruit friends, family - it'd make for a great Christmas gift!)

When we hit our minimums I'll send out a last call and then the order will go into production with an anticipated turnaround time of 8-9 weeks.

Kross Kickoff 2015

This is the grainiest picture that we have ever published on the blog, but it is the only photo that we have from last night. The Kickoff did not draw a big crowd, but the level of competition was pretty high. Shae finished second among the women. Kellen made it on to the men’s podium.
Every cross race that Victor Velo has ever put on has been fun and well organized and the Kickoff was no exception. It was mostly run under the lights of the baseball fields, but there were some dark sections (but less dark than last year’s Spooky Cross). Based on our experience there, Dan, Shae, Kellen, and I all raced with a headlight which greatly facilitated riding the darker portions.
The faces in this photo will mostly be familiar to regular readers. You may not know Cody Dunn, Weston’s brother, who joined us for the Kickoff last night.

From Heather: Kelton and Tim Compete at Inaugural OgdenCX

Earlier today, I posted a link to a Cyclocross Magazine article and photo gallery from Sunday’s race at the new OgdenCX Cyclocross Park. Here is something even better. We had a couple of local riders (Kelton and Tim) as well as a professional photographer (Heather) there for the inaugural day of racing at OgdenCX.
Congratulations to Kelton who skipped the junior race and went directly to the highly competitive Men’s B Race to find the fast guys, still finishing comfortably inside the top ten.

Ironman Tahoe

The challenging course at Lake Tahoe Ironman was matched by the spectacular venue. Crystal clear water and jagged mountains were the backdrop for both the full Ironman and Ironman 70.3 this year. Plagued by bad weather and bad luck in previous years, everyone was relived to have a beautiful day to race. The water was 62° and the high temperature for the day was 83°, although it felt much warmer at the high elevation (6,224').

Improving on his swim time and putting in solid performances on both the challenging bike loop and the long hot run course, Tony was happy to post an impressive finishing time just under the 6hr. mark. Tony was joined by fellow competitors and friends Kristy Cisco (70.3) and Mike Whitesides (Full Ironman). Mike continues to amaze as he a flew through the course at a blistering pace and finished 8th in his age group. Unfortunately, just announced today, this was the last year that Tahoe will host the Ironman, making Sunday's race especially memorable.

Full distance competitors enter the water at dawn.

70.3 competitors exit the swim.

Tony improves on his overall swim time.
Tony takes in fuel on the bike.

Beautiful backdrop for the run.

Racers finished at beautiful Squaw Valley resort.

Tony, Mike and Kristy enjoy a well deserved finish.

From Kellen: Link to Cycling Utah Cross Calendar

You may be familiar with this already. There is an announcement for the Cube

tracking down scheduling information on the local races which we will post

Today's Forecast Uncertain, TNR Time Shift Tuesday Sept 22nd

If you are in the Rexburg area, you already know it is a cold, wet morning.  The afternoon forecast is looking a little better, but not great. I understand the whole thing about riding in any weather, but if it is pouring cold rain at 6 p.m., the TNR is off for tonight. Nevertheless, I am pretty optimistic that we can get out a while. There are a lot of tired post-Lotoja legs so I do not think a shorter, easier ride tonight would be a bad thing.
Due to the earlier sunset, the Tuesday Night Ride will shift to a 5:30 start one week from today on September 22nd.

Lotoja XXXIII Preliminary Report

Lotoja is a big event and probably too big a story to tell in one post. Hopefully, we can follow up with a couple more, but I want to at least get something started now. For some time, Jeff has talked about organizing a team for Lotoja with a commitment to train together, work together in the race, and provide a good experience for every member of the team. He has done a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes work this year to bring that vision to reality as well as providing a generous amount of sponsorship to the team.
We went to Lotoja this year with an unprecedented amount of resources and support. In addition to Jeff’s organization and sponsorship of the team, we had ten bikes, wheels, and gear packed in Kellen’s new trailer. Joe supplied an expansive variety of energy and feed zone foods. John once again arranged for some very generous family friends to provide us with lodging at their cabin in Logan. John’s friends Mark and Rose Kincart traveled with us Friday and Saturday to pull the trailer with the bikes and gear. Tim was in Alaska on Friday but traveled all day to get back to Utah, slept a couple of hours, and drove through the night to meet us in Logan. Along with Shae and Stephanie, Tim provided our close and feed zone support.
Every single one of these people performed above and beyond our expectations. We are very grateful to them as well as numerous friends and family members who met us in Jackson.
Conditions were tough yesterday. It was hot and windy. Our day did not pass with incident, but we were able to keep most of the group together to the finish. Plus I think it was a pretty fun day if fun is a word you can use to describe Lotoja. Even when it goes well, nobody escapes without some real suffering.
The first photo shows the group at the start (Ryan, me, Kellen, Justin, Jeff, Brian, Daniel, Joe, Jason, and John. In the second photo, Bruce Baxter joins us at the finish line. This year probably represents a record level of participation from Upper Valley residents.  I will mention all that I know in addition to the people I mentioned above: Cameron Patch, Boyd Berry, Tim Martindale, James Helfrich, Greg Roach, Justin Lamb, Kyle Stucki, and probably more that I have overlooked or forgotten. If any of you want to post some pictures or share your stories, we would be very happy to put them on the blog.

The Team Trailer

A few days ago, I promised to post a picture of the new team trailer. This is Kellen's baby. He took the initiative to find the trailer, organize the graphics wrap, arrange for some sponsorship, and cover the balance of the cost with his own money. The trailer is wired with electric outlets and features two fold-down beds. Kellen and Ryan have been working to build wheel racks and bike racks to carry ten or more bicycles. The maiden voyage for the new trailer will be Lotoja this weekend.

Shae Wins the Tequila at RPI

It was another great day at Rebecca’s Private Idaho. Local participants described it as a fun and amazing ride. Dan and Shae were interested in doing the Big Potato, but I begged Dan to do the Small Fry (which is still 60 miles and includes the very tough climb up Trail Creek Pass) so that he could save his legs to drag me through Lotoja in 6 days. By the time they got to the half way point, Shae decided she might as well win the whole thing and set off on a successful pursuit of the leaders. She was rewarded for her victory by a gift from one of the sponsors, a big bottle of patron Tequila. A big congratulation is in order as well to Cobe Miller who won the junior division of the Big Potato for the second consecutive year.

White Owl Butte Loop

Had a great day out on a new loop up Poleline until it turns into Owl Butte Road.  Rode it to the Mud Springs Rd intersection and out along the excellent descent.  It's soft gravel going up but a great ride back.

An Easter Egg of a ride for those who've been on most of the other roads in the area.

From Brian: Kelson Bike Atop the Iconic Climbs of the Giro

From Kellen: Velominati-The Rules

The Prophet (Merckx) and the Apostle (De Vlaeminck) forge the foundation of The Rules.
Cycling is a sport with a long and rich history based in generations of tradition. Most cyclists have a sense that there is a set of unwritten rules that they are expected to follow. This is particularly true of road cyclists. The guys at Velominati have published what may be the most comprehensive list anywhere of the so called unwritten rules. In your cycling career, you will meet cyclists who are slavishly devoted to these and other rules of the sport. Nothing you do on or around a bike will be pure enough for them. At the other extreme are the cavemen of cycling who are unbound by any rules. Most of us fall somewhere in between.

Some of these rules resonate pretty deeply with me such as #63 (point in the direction you are turning), and #88 (don't surge). Others do not. As just one example, in my early years as a road cyclist, I was unwilling to use a saddle bag because I did not want to be the guy with the saddle bag. At some point, I realized how useful the saddle bag was to carry spare tubes, etc for long rides and I almost never carried my repair kit in jersey pockets again. Regardless of how you feel about the The Rules individually, I think you will find this entertaining and informative reading.

From Brian: Live Big With Patrick Sweeney: Rebecca's Private Idaho 2014

I have not had time to watch these videos yet, but plan to do so. Mostly what I know about them is that a closeup of my butt provides the segue between parts 1 and 2. Even thought I am not super excited about that, I am pretty relieved that I was wearing the new Kelson kit and not the old black and blue Pactimo Kelson kit. I still like the black jersey quite a bit, but the only time I wear the bibs is as a liner layer for MTB. The bibs which tended to grey out even when they were new have become increasingly transparent with wear. The image of me in the transparent bibs would not have represented the Kelson brand well.
